Natural Hair: Homemade Mix & A Cornrow Twistout Style

A few days ago I decided to combine some of my favorite oils together with some shea butter. In the past I've combined coconut oil with shea butter and used that to seal my ends. This time, I added a few other oils to the mix.

Here's what I did and what you'll need if you want to try:

Ingredients:
Shea Butter (5+ tablespoons)
Vatika Coconut Oil (2 tablespoons)
Grapeseed Oil ( 1 tablespoon)
Castor Oil (2 tablespoons)
Vitamin E Oil (1 tablespoon)

Steps:
1. Heat shea butter so it is slightly, but not totally, melted.
2. Warm the Vatika oil (or any coconut oil) if it is solid. Measure 2 tablespoons and add to the shea butter.
3. Measure 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil and add to the shea butter.
4. Measure 2 tablespoons of castor oil and add to the shea.
5. Add 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil to the shea.
6. Blend the oils and shea butter together with a hand-held mixer, whipping until everything is evenly combined.
7. Cover and place into the refrigerator for about a half hour or until the mix has cooled and stiffened.

I like this mix because it melts easily into the skin and the hair. It also made my hair super shiny, defined, not weighed down, and it sealed my ends beautifully. The shots below are from a twistout that I just did two days ago on dry, stretched hair. I left the twists in until I unravelled this morning.

For this style I parted my hair horizontally from ear to ear. I twisted the back using water and the shea-oil mix. I tested my braiding skills and cornrowed the front. It is tough to braid your own hair but I think I did ok. I did not braid tightly and I parted in a way that accommodated for my recovering edges. We'll see how long they last before they get frizzy!

The humidity is out of control right now so I will probably have to re-twist at night to maintain definition. To do that, I will simply re-mist with water and twist, adding more of the shea-oil mix only if needed.

And voila, there you have it! What new mixes have you tried lately?

  5. Very pretty!! You have that "mommy glow" :0) I'm not really good at mixing products. I tried that once with some leave in conditioner and ended up throwing it away because I was paranoid about bacterial intrusion...LOL.

  6. Thanks ladies! I am quite pleased myself. It held up pretty good today in the weather.

@Mikimu-Yeah I have to be careful with anything made with water. Bacteria loves to grow!

  7. THIS is a good idea!!! I'm muslim and since I wear the khimar (or hijab. a head scarf) it's hard to do certain styles because I don't want to look crazy with a bunch of huge lumps sticking out when I put on my scarf. most Muslim women pull their hair into a ponytail or a bun for that reason.
This style is awesome because it doesn't create a bunch of lumps and I can have a cute style when I take off my scarf (not the old tired bun)!!

Congrats on your bundle of joy!

  11. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous! I love this style!! When you say you did this on stretched hair, did you do a blow out or use some other technique to stretch it? This is so beautiful and the cornrows add the perfect touch! They also seem like they would make the twist out work very well in a sleek updo.

  12. @hairscapades: I wore my hair in a bun for a few days so the hair was stretched that way. I have also worn the twist out part in a pony and a bun and both worked well!

  13. Ahhhh! Thank you! Love it. I also came across an old post of yours with your twists done with afro braiding hair. You're making me contemplate that style for the Fall and I haven't had extension braids in close to a decade! But yours were soooo gorgeous and I always loved the look of twists, but my hair is fine, so my twists look scalpy. They also end to unravel. Fortunately, I know someplace that might be able to do them without traumatizing my hair or scalp. My sister takes my niece to a place and they are gentle and don't braid too tightly. Exactly what I want. Okay, rambling as usual. I've just discovered your site through one of my readers. Really like what I've seen so far! Hope to have the time to visit often. This blogging is a lot of work! LOL! But, I enjoy it! Thanks again!

  21. Love your ideas, thank you so much for posting the recipe, I think this will work on my daughters hair, I seem to have issues finding the right products for her as she gets very dry, frizzy and poofy so easily!

  22. Hi, I saw pics of this style on black girl long hair online, and it's gorgeous. I used one of the pics in a blog article I wrote (in a positive way, of course), and attributed the shot back to your blog. However, I was later convicted that I probably should have asked you first. Here is the link if you'd like to see it, and let me know if I need to remove it.
